Anemone Crab (such as Neopetrolisthes maculatus), also commonly known as the Porcelain Anemone Crab: 1. Appearance & Coloration Coloration: They feature a creamy-white or porcelain-like body densely covered in striking reddish-brown spots and dots, matching the visual patterns seen in your reference photos. They also possess wide, flattened claws used for defense and signaling. Morphology: Unlike true crabs, they are actually porcelain crabs (closer relatives of squat lobsters). They have delicate fan-like appendages (maxillipeds) near their mouthparts used to filter food from the water column. Size: They grow to a small adult size of about 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 4 cm) across the carapace. 2. Native Origin & Habitat Geography: They are native to the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from the Red Sea and East Africa to Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Japan, and Australia. Environment: Found in shallow, tropical reef waters living in a close obligate mutualism with host sea anemones (such as Heteractis or Stichodactyla species), where they find absolute protection among the stinging tentacles. 3. Tank Requirements Minimum Tank Size: Requires an aquarium of at least 20 to 30 gallons to maintain stable water parameters.
