Anemone Shrimp

Anemone Shrimp (Periclimenes brevicarpalis), also widely known as the White-Spot Anemone Shrimp or Popcorn Shrimp, Peacock Tail Anemone Shrimp: 1. Appearance & Coloration Coloration: They feature a mostly transparent, translucent body accented by distinct white and orange-red patches on their tail fans and tips, often accompanied by striking purple or white spots. Morphology: They have slender bodies and long, thin walking legs, paired with characteristic transparent claws. They frequently flick or rock their bodies back and forth in a signature dance when interacting or signaling. Size: They grow to a tiny adult size of about 0.75 to 1.2 inches (2 to 3 cm), making them ideal for nano tanks. 2. Native Origin & Habitat Geography: They are native to the Indo-West Pacific region, spanning from the Red Sea and East Africa across to India, Southeast Asia, Japan, and northern Australia. Environment: Found in shallow, tropical reef flats living in obligate symbiosis with large host sea anemones (such as Stichodactyla or Entacmaea species), where they find absolute protection among the stinging tentacles. 3. Tank Requirements Minimum Tank Size: Requires a well-established aquarium of at least 10 to 20 gallons. Water Parameters: Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C) Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.020 – 1.025 pH: 8.1 – 8.4 Host Anemone: While they can occasionally adapt to long-tentacled corals or live without an anemone, they thrive best and exhibit natural behaviors when paired with a healthy host sea anemone. 4. Diet & Feeding Natural Diet: Feeds on mucus secreted by its host anemone, trapped detritus, and small zooplankton filtered or scavenged from the water column. Captive Diet: Very easy to feed. They readily accept standard aquarium foods including finely chopped mysis shrimp, cyclops, artemia, and high-quality pellet or flake fragments. 5. Reef Compatibility Status: Reef Safe Behavior: Completely safe with corals, clams, and passive marine life. They will not harm sessile reef invertebrates or nip at coral tissue. 6. Temperament & Tank Mates Temperament: Peaceful, though they can occasionally show mild territoriality toward other small shrimp if space inside their host anemone is constrained. Compatibility: Excellent addition to nano or peaceful community reef tanks. They pair well with small gobies, dartfish, and clownfish (though caution is needed with clownfish, as a large clownfish may bully or evict the shrimp from a shared anemone). Avoid housing them with aggressive predatory fish or large crustaceans.
