Banded Pipefish (Dactylocampus dactyliophorus), a fascinating and delicate cousin of the seahorse: 1. Appearance & Coloration Body Shape: They feature extremely slender, elongated, rigid bodies encased in a series of bony rings rather than scales. Coloration: They are beautifully patterned with alternating vertical rings of reddish-brown/maroon and white, often accented with thin yellow or orange markings near the tail. Size: They typically grow to about 6 to 7.5 inches in length. 2. Tank Requirements Minimum Tank Size: Best kept in a species-specific tank or a very peaceful nano/community system of 30 gallons or larger. Water Parameters: Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C) Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.020 – 1.025 pH: 8.1 – 8.4 Water Flow: They are slow swimmers and cannot handle high, turbulent water flow. Provide gentle, low-flow areas where they can comfortably hover. Aquascaping: Peaceful reef setups with plenty of live rock crevices, macroalgae, and quiet hiding spots. Avoid stinging corals (like large-polyp stony corals with aggressive sweepers or anemones) that can easily harm them. 3. Diet & Feeding Natural Diet: Microscopic crustaceans, copepods, amphipods, and tiny zooplankton plucked from the water column or rockwork. Captive Diet: This is the biggest challenge in keeping pipefish. While they will hunt for live copepods in a mature tank, they often need to be actively trained to accept frozen foods. Offer them live baby brine shrimp, enriched frozen cyclops, and frozen mysis shrimp fed via a targeted pipette or feeding station. 4. Reef Compatibility Status: Reef Safe (With Specialized Tank Mates) Behavior: Completely peaceful and will not touch corals, inverts, or clams. However, because they are slow and defenseless, they must not be kept with aggressive, fast-eating fish (like dottybacks, aggressive wrasses, or damselfish) that will outcompete them for food or nip at their delicate bodies. 5. Temperament & Tank Mates Temperament: Incredibly docile and slow-moving. Compatibility: Best housed in pairs or small groups in a dedicated seahorse/pipefish tank, or alongside ultra-peaceful tank mates like mandarinfishes, small gobies, and peaceful firefish.
