Banggai Cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni): 1. Appearance & Coloration Coloration: They feature a striking silver or greyish-white body adorned with three prominent vertical black bands (one running through the eye and two across the body), accented by distinct white spots scattered across the body and fins. Morphology: They have elongated, highly distinctive second dorsal and anal fins, along with deeply forked caudal fins. Size: They grow to a compact adult size of about 2.5 to 3 inches (6 to 8 cm). 2. Native Origin & Habitat Geography: They are endemic to the Banggai Islands of Indonesia, with a very restricted natural geographic range. Environment: Found in shallow, calm protected bays and lagoons, often sheltering around sea anemones, branching corals, sea urchins, and even mangrove roots. 3. Tank Requirements Minimum Tank Size: Best housed in an aquarium of 30 gallons or larger to provide stable water parameters and peaceful hiding spaces. Water Parameters: Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C) Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.020 – 1.025 pH: 8.1 – 8.4 Aquascaping: Provide plenty of live rock with caves, overhangs, and macroalgae or artificial shelter where they can leisurely hover, as they are slow, deliberate swimmers that dislike strong water currents. 4. Diet & Feeding Natural Diet: Small zooplankton, benthic crustaceans, and copepods drifting in the water column. Captive Diet: Generally hearty eaters in captivity. Offer a varied carnivorous diet consisting of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, and high-quality small pellets or flakes. 5. Reef Compatibility Status: Reef Safe Behavior: Completely safe with corals, clams, anemones, and all sessile invertebrates. They will not disturb the aquascape. 6. Temperament & Tank Mates Temperament: Peaceful, slow-moving, and somewhat shy. However, they can display intraspecific aggression; once a bonded pair forms, they may aggressively chase other cardinals in smaller systems. Compatibility: Excellent community fish for peaceful setups. They pair well with docile tank mates such as gobies, dartfish, blennies, and small clowns. Avoid keeping them with boisterous, fast-swimming, or aggressive fish that will outcompete them for food.
