The Radiant Schooling Jewel: Female Bimaculatus Anthias Tips: Multiple feedings per day are needed, if you have more than one female, one will likely turn into a male The Bimaculatus Anthias (Pseudanthias bimaculatus), also widely known as the Twinspot or Two-Spot Anthias, is an absolute showstopper in large reef aquariums. While males boast intense red-orange bodies with intricate scribbled lines, the female Bimaculatus holds her own with an incredibly elegant, bright color palette. Known for their active nature and schooling habits, these mid-water planktivores bring constant movement to the upper half of the aquarium. Key Characteristics & Behavior Striking Color Profile: Unlike the males (who feature the signature "two spots" on their dorsal fins), females exhibit a uniform, velvety pink-to-purple body. This acts as a beautiful canvas for their contrasting neon-yellow dorsal, anal, and caudal (tail) fins. They also typically feature a subtle, beautiful yellow line slicing across their head directly through the eye. The Harem Structure: In their native Indo-Pacific reef slopes, Bimaculatus Anthias live in tightly-knit social harems composed of one dominant male and a group of multiple females. In the home aquarium, keeping them in a group (ideally one male to three or more females) brings out their natural schooling behavior and curbs territorial stress. Protogynous Hermaphroditism: Like all anthias species, Bimaculatus are born as females. They possess the incredible biological ability to change sex based on social hierarchy. If the dominant male dies or is removed, the largest, most dominant female in the group will physically transition into a colorful male over the course of a few weeks to lead the harem. High Metabolism Feeders: Because they spend all day hovering against water currents in open water, these fish burn energy rapidly. They cannot survive on a standard once-a-day feeding schedule. They require multiple small feedings daily (3 to 5 times) of finely chopped meaty foods like mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and marine copepods. Quick Species Overview Scientific Name: Pseudanthias bimaculatus Maximum Size: Up to 5 inches (12 cm) Minimum Tank Size: 75 Gallons for a single fish; 125+ Gallons for a small harem Reef Safety: 100% reef compatible; entirely safe around corals and mobile invertebrates. Care Level: Moderate (due to strict, frequent feeding demands). Aquarist Placement Tip: Female Bimaculatus Anthias can be slightly shyer than other outgoing anthias (like Lyretails) when first introduced. They require an aquascape featuring plenty of open horizontal swimming space paired with deep rock overhangs, caves, and crevices. When startled, they will instantly dive into the rockwork to hide. A secure mesh jump guard is also mandatory, as these active swimmers are notorious for leaping out of open-top tanks.
