Blonde Naso Tang (Naso lituratus), one of the most popular and striking surgeonfish in the marine aquarium hobby: 1. Appearance & Coloration Body Shape: Features an elongated, torpedo-shaped body with a distinctively sleek profile. Coloration: Their base color is a rich, slate-grayish brown, accented by a bright yellow dorsal fin, vibrant orange lips, and bright yellow highlights around their eyes and the base of their caudal fin. Streamers: Adult males develop long, elegant filament "streamers" trailing from the top and bottom of their lyre-shaped tail fins. Size: They are a large tang species, growing up to 14 to 18 inches in length, and require plenty of open swimming room as they mature. 2. Tank Requirements Minimum Tank Size: Due to their active swimming behavior and large adult size, they require a minimum of a 180-gallon aquarium (with a 6-foot or longer footprint preferred). Water Parameters: Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C) Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.020 – 1.025 pH: 8.1 – 8.4 Water Quality: They prefer high water movement, high dissolved oxygen levels, and exceptional water quality. Aquascaping: Provide a spacious aquascape with robust rock formations and caves for hiding, combined with large, open channels for fast, continuous swimming. 3. Diet & Feeding Natural Diet: Primarily herbivorous, grazing extensively on macroalgae and benthic film in the wild. Captive Diet: Their diet must consist heavily of plant matter to maintain their immune system and vibrant coloration. Feed them regular portions of dried Nori (seaweed), spirulina flakes, marine algae pellets, and occasional meaty preparations (like mysis or brine shrimp) for overall nutrition. 4. Reef Compatibility Status: Reef Safe Behavior: They are generally completely safe with corals, inverts, and clams. They will not bother sessile invertebrates, making them an excellent addition to mixed reef setups as long as there is enough physical space. 5. Temperament & Tank Mates Temperament: Peaceful and relatively docile compared to other tang species (like Acanthurus or Zebrasoma tangs). They are typically active day-swimmers that mind their own business. Compatibility: They can be housed with a wide variety of community fish, large angels, wrasses, and peaceful tank mates. While they can usually be kept with other species of tangs, it is best to avoid housing them with other Naso species in smaller systems to prevent territorial disputes.
