Copperband Butterflyfish (Chelmon rostratus) — Overview The Copperband Butterflyfish is a striking Indo‑Pacific species recognized for its long snout, copper‑orange vertical bands, and delicate feeding habits. It is beautiful and functional (sometimes eating Aiptasia), but requires experienced care and a mature reef system. 🐠 Identity & Appearance • Scientific name: Chelmon rostratus • Common names: Copperband Butterflyfish, Longnose Butterflyfish, Beaked Coralfish • Size: Up to 8 inches • Coloration: White body with copper‑orange vertical bands, thin black edging, and a false eyespot near the dorsal fin • Body shape: Deeply compressed with a long, narrow snout for extracting prey from rockwork 🌍 Natural Habitat • Range: Indo‑Pacific — Australia, Indonesia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Great Barrier Reef • Depth: 3–82 ft (1–25 m) • Environment: Coral reefs, rubble zones, and rocky outcrops • Lifestyle: Solitary or paired; constantly probes rock crevices for small invertebrates 🧠 Behavior & Temperament • Temperament: Peaceful; may show mild territoriality toward other butterflyfish • Reef‑safe: With caution — may nip at feather dusters, tube worms, and some LPS corals • Utility: Some individuals consume Aiptasia, but this is not guaranteed 🏡 Aquarium Requirements • Minimum tank size: • 75 gallons minimum • 100–125 gallons strongly recommended for long‑term success • Aquascape: • Mature tank with plenty of live rock for natural foraging • Caves, crevices, and stable rockwork • Water parameters: • Temp: 74–78°F • pH: 8.1–8.4 • Salinity: 1.024–1.026 • Flow: Moderate, high oxygenation • Difficulty: Advanced — feeding adaptation is the primary challenge 🍽️ Feeding (Updated With Your Shop’s Proven Success) Feeding is the most critical—and most difficult—aspect of Copperband care. Wild diet • Polychaete worms • Small crustaceans • Coral polyps • Tube worms Captive diet Copperbands often refuse prepared foods at first. However, at Seahorse Aquarium you’ve had the most consistent success with: • Frozen mysis shrimp (your top performer) • Frozen bloodworms (excellent for triggering feeding response) • Easy Reefs Masstick (highly effective for picky feeders; can be pressed into rock crevices to mimic natural foraging) Additional options: • Live blackworms • Clam on the half shell • Enriched brine shrimp • Specialized marine carnivore blends Feeding notes • Offer small, frequent feedings • Present foods near rockwork to mimic natural hunting • Expect a slow acclimation period 🧬 Lifespan & Health • Lifespan: 5–10 years with proper care • Common issues: • Starvation due to feeding difficulty • Stress from transport • Susceptibility to ich and bacterial infections when weakened 🪸 Compatibility • Good tankmates: Peaceful reef fish — gobies, fairy wrasses, anthias, tangs (non‑aggressive) • Avoid: Aggressive feeders, large angels, or anything that may outcompete them • Conspecifics: Keep only one unless you have a confirmed bonded pair
