Earl's Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus earlei): 1. Appearance & Coloration Coloration: One of the most breathtaking and prized fairy wrasses in the marine aquarium hobby. Males display a stunning gradient of brilliant yellow, soft peach, and deep magenta-purple, accented by striking neon blue lines and iridescent markings along their face, body, and fins. Females are generally a softer pinkish-red with less intense highlighting. Flasher/Fairy Behavior: Like other members of the Cirrhilabrus genus, males can dramatically intensify their colors ("flash") during courtship rituals or when displaying dominance. Size: They are a moderately small, slender species, growing to an adult size of about 3 to 4 inches (7 to 10 cm). 2. Native Origin & Habitat Geography: Widely distributed in the deep-water reefs of the Indo-Pacific, including regions around the Coral Sea, Fiji, and the Philippines. Environment: Inhabits deep drop-offs, outer reef slopes, and rubble zones, typically found at greater depths where lighting is more diffused. Because of this natural depth preference, they appreciate moderately subdued lighting or shaded overhangs in the aquarium. 3. Tank Requirements Minimum Tank Size: Requires an aquarium of at least 50 to 75 gallons to provide ample swimming room for these active, open-water swimmers. Tank Cover: A tight-fitting lid or secure mesh screen top is mandatory, as fairy wrasses are excellent jumpers when startled. Rockwork & Aquascaping: Provide plenty of live rock with caves, ledges, and overhangs where they can retreat for safety and sleep. Like other fairy wrasses, they do not require a deep sand bed to sleep in, instead choosing to wedge themselves into rock crevices or secrete a temporary mucus cocoon at night. 4. Diet & Feeding Natural Diet: Carnivorous zooplanktivores that feed on copepods, small crustaceans, fish eggs, and drifting plankton in the water column. Captive Diet: Readily accepts standard aquarium fare. Provide a varied carnivorous diet including high-quality marine flakes/pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, cyclops, enriched brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafoods. Feed 2 to 3 times a day in small portions. 5. Reef Compatibility Status: Reef Safe Behavior: Completely safe with corals, anemones, clams, and decorative invertebrates. They will not nip at sessile reef life or disturb your aquascape. 6. Temperament & Tank Mates Temperament: Peaceful, active, and generally docile. Compatibility: Excellent community reef fish. They can be kept singly or as a harem (one male with multiple females, introduced simultaneously to prevent aggression). Avoid housing them with overly aggressive or hyper-aggressive tankmates (such as aggressive dottybacks, large triggerfish, or boisterous tangs) that might intimidate them or outcompete them during feeding time.
