Eibli Mimic Tang

The Eibli Mimic Tang (Acanthurus tristis) is a juvenile angelfish mimic that transforms into a sleek, chocolate‑brown surgeonfish as it matures. It’s hardy, algae‑driven, and visually fascinating because of its dramatic color change and Batesian mimicry strategy. 🐠 Identity & Appearance Common names: Eibli Mimic Tang, Blackcheek Surgeonfish, Indian Mimic Tang Scientific name: Acanthurus tristis Juvenile appearance: Mimics the Eibli Angelfish (Centropyge eibli)**, copying its grey body, orange vertical stripe, and tail markings. This mimicry helps avoid predation—predators recognize dwarf angels as difficult prey. Adult appearance: Transitions to light brown or grey, with darker fins and subtle facial markings. Size: Up to 25 cm (10 in). 🌍 Natural Habitat Range: East Indian Ocean, Maldives, Indonesia, Bali. Depth: 6–85 ft (2–26 m). Environment: Lagoons and seaward reefs with abundant algae for grazing. 🧠 Behavior & Temperament Temperament: Semi‑aggressive, especially toward other tangs or similarly shaped fish. Reef‑safe: Yes—primarily an algae grazer; occasional reports of LPS nipping. Activity: Constant swimmer; needs long runs and oxygen‑rich water. 🏡 Aquarium Care Minimum tank size: 264 gallons (1000 L) recommended by ReefApp. 120 gallons minimum per FishLore.
