Exquisite Fairy Wrasse

Exquisite Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus exquisitus) Overview The Exquisite Fairy Wrasse is one of the most stunning and variable wrasses in the hobby. Depending on its collection region (ranging from the Indian Ocean to the Western Pacific and Red Sea), coloration can vary dramatically, featuring striking neon blues, purples, reds, and yellows. They are active, peaceful swimmers that add brilliant, dynamic movement to an established reef aquarium. Quick Facts & Care Requirements Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons (due to their active swimming nature and need for open swimming space). Care Level: Moderate (hardy once acclimated, but prone to jumping and requires a secure lid). Temperament: Peaceful and social. Maximum Size: Up to 4 to 5 inches. Reef Safe: Yes (completely safe with corals, clams, and sessile invertebrates). Feeding & Nutrition Diet Type: Carnivore Dietary Requirements: They are enthusiastic eaters that require a varied, protein-rich diet. Offer high-quality marine flakes, and frozen foods such as Mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, and finely chopped table shrimp or squid. Feeding Frequency: 2 to 3 times per day in small portions to support their high metabolisms. Notable Fish Compatibility Issues Conspecific Aggression: While generally peaceful with other species, males can show aggression toward other fairy wrasses or similar-looking wrasses, especially if introduced after the tank is already established. Harem Housing: They are best kept singly or as a single male with a harem of multiple females (introduced simultaneously). Avoid housing multiple males in anything less than a very large system. Bully Caution: Avoid housing them with overly aggressive tankmates (like large dottybacks, aggressive damselfish, or large predatory triggers/groupers) that may intimidate them or outcompete them for food. Basic Care in Captivity Aquarium Setup: Provide plenty of live rock with caves, overhangs, and crevices for security and sleeping. They will often spin a mucus cocoon at night to sleep in. Jumping Precaution: Crucial. Exquisite Fairy Wrasses are notorious jumpers. A tight-fitting aquarium lid or screen top with zero gaps is mandatory. Water Parameters: Maintain stable reef conditions—temperature between 72°F to 78°F, salinity of 1.023 to 1.025, alkalinity of 8–11 dKH, and low nitrates/phosphates.
