WYSIWYG Coral The Fat Head Dendro (Dendrophyllia fistulata) is a large‑polyp, non‑photosynthetic LPS coral prized for its bright orange‑yellow tentacles, meaty polyps, and ability to stay open during the day once trained. It’s hardy for an NPS coral but requires consistent feeding to thrive. What It Is The Fat Head Dendro is a member of the Dendrophylliidae family — a group of corals that lack zooxanthellae and therefore rely entirely on captured food for nutrition. Unlike many NPS corals, Dendros are known to be easier to keep and can be trained to open during the day for feeding. They originate from the Indo‑Pacific, typically found in caves, overhangs, and shaded reef zones where light is minimal. Appearance Fat Head Dendros are instantly recognizable: • Large, fleshy polyps with thick tentacles • Bright orange, yellow, or red coloration • Meaty, “sun coral‑like” look but with bigger, fuller heads • Polyps that expand dramatically when feeding Their size and color make them standout showpieces even as single heads. Care Requirements Because they are non‑photosynthetic, lighting is irrelevant — they can live in low light or high light as long as they are fed. Their success depends on stable water quality and regular feedings. Feeding This is the core of Dendro care. They require meaty foods such as: • Mysis shrimp • Brine shrimp • Finely chopped marine meats Recommended feeding frequency is 2–3 times per week, though some hobbyists feed more often for faster growth. They can be trained to open during the day by feeding at consistent times. Flow Moderate flow is ideal — enough to keep food suspended but not so strong that the polyps cannot extend fully. (Inference based on typical NPS LPS behavior supported by feeding discussions.) Placement Because they don’t rely on light, they can be placed: • Under overhangs • In caves • On the sand • In shaded areas of the aquascape This makes them excellent for filling low‑light zones. Behavior & Hardiness Compared to other NPS corals, Fat Head Dendros are considered moderately easy because they: • Open readily • Accept a wide range of foods • Don’t require constant target feeding like some Tubastraea species However, they must be fed regularly or they will decline. They are peaceful and do not extend long sweepers, making them safe near most LPS and soft corals. Why Reefers Love Them • Huge, colorful polyps • Daytime extension when trained • Low‑light placement flexibility • High visual impact even as a single head • Less demanding than most NPS corals
