Gold Lightning Maroon Clownfish Premnas biaculeatus The Gold Lightning Maroon Clownfish is a distinctive captive-bred designer form of the Maroon Clownfish, known for its deep maroon coloration, irregular “Lightning” patterning, and developing gold coloration. The Gold Lightning Maroon was developed by Sea & Reef Aquaculture by crossing a Sea & Reef Lightning Maroon Clownfish with a Sea & Reef Gold Nugget Maroon Clownfish. The resulting offspring display a wide variety of individual Lightning patterns, making each fish visually unique. Sea & Reef introduced the Gold Lightning Maroon as a new designer strain in 2019. A Unique Color Transformation One of the particularly interesting characteristics of this strain comes from its Gold Nugget lineage. Gold Nugget Maroons can begin life with predominantly white coloration and develop their golden coloration as they mature. Sea & Reef reports that this transformation typically occurs around 1–1½ years of age and at approximately 2 inches in length. Because the Gold Lightning Maroon was initially a newer strain, Sea & Reef noted that the exact maturation of its coloration was still being observed, although they expected the fish to develop more yellow/gold coloration as they matured. The Lightning pattern itself can vary considerably between individuals. Rather than three conventional clean white bars, the pattern is broken into irregular, branching and “lightning bolt” shapes. The offspring from the Gold Lightning × Lightning breeding program can therefore have dramatically different pattern arrangements from one fish to another. Captive-Bred Origin & Breeder Credit Original developer: Sea & Reef Aquaculture, LLC Franklin, Maine, USA Sea & Reef Aquaculture states that the Gold Lightning Maroon was created specifically from its Lightning Maroon × Gold Nugget Maroon breeding lines. Sea & Reef was founded in 2003 by marine biologist Soren Hansen and specializes in captive propagation of marine ornamental fish. Sea & Reef Aquaculture — Gold Lightning Maroon Care & Husbandry Characteristic Information Scientific name Premnas biaculeatus Common name Gold Lightning Maroon Clownfish Origin Captive bred Maximum size Approximately 6 in (15 cm) Temperament Territorial; can become aggressive Reef compatible Yes Diet Omnivore Difficulty Easy to moderate Anemone required No Recommended host Bubble Tip Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor) Sea & Reef describes the Maroon Clownfish as the largest commonly recognized clownfish species, with females capable of reaching approximately 6 inches. They can be particularly territorial when spawning, so Sea & Reef recommends keeping a single Maroon or a bonded pair rather than mixing Maroons with other clownfish species. Captive-bred Maroons are generally less aggressive than wild-collected specimens. Feeding Gold Lightning Maroons are omnivores with a strong appetite. A varied marine diet can include: High-quality marine pellets Marine flake foods Frozen Mysis shrimp Frozen brine shrimp Other appropriately sized frozen marine foods Sea & Reef conditions its captive-bred Maroons to accept pellets, flakes, Mysis shrimp and brine shrimp. Anemone Requirements An anemone is not necessary for the Gold Lightning Maroon to thrive. When an anemone is desired, Sea & Reef specifically recommends the Bubble Tip Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor), which is a popular and relatively hardy host for aquarium-kept Maroon Clownfish. Tankmates This is one area where the Gold Lightning Maroon differs considerably from smaller, more peaceful designer clownfish. As an adult, a Maroon Clownfish can become strongly territorial, particularly when paired and spawning. It is generally best suited to a carefully planned community aquarium rather than a tank containing multiple clownfish species. A single specimen or established pair is the safer approach. Why They're So Special The Gold Lightning Maroon combines two distinctive captive-bred traits: Lightning Maroon × Gold Nugget Maroon → Gold Lightning Maroon The result is a fish with: Deep maroon/red coloration Irregular Lightning-style markings Gold/orange coloration that can intensify with age Highly variable individual patterns Captive-bred hardiness A particularly striking appearance as the fish matures Because the pattern is variable, no two Gold Lightning Maroons necessarily look exactly alike—which makes individual fish especially interesting to collectors of designer clownfish. Breeder Note For a product page, I'd use “Gold Lightning Maroon Clownfish” rather than “Gold Lighting Maroon,” since Lightning is the established name used by Sea & Reef and other marine sources. Sea & Reef's own listing identifies the fish as Gold Lightning Maroon Clownfish (Premnas biaculeatus).
