Half-Black Mimic Tang (Acanthurus chronixis): 1. Appearance & Coloration Mimicry: This species is a remarkable mimic, evolving to look nearly identical to the Half-Black Angelfish (Centropyge vrolikii). This natural disguise helps protect the young tang from predators by making them look like a well-defended angelfish. Coloration: They feature a pale beige or yellowish-tan front half with subtle, intricate worm-like patterns on the head and face, transitioning into a dark brown or black rear section, dorsal and anal fins, and a caudal fin edged in bright electric blue. Size: They grow to an adult size of about 6 to 8 inches, making them much more manageable for home aquariums than larger tang species. 2. Tank Requirements Minimum Tank Size: Requires at least a 75 to 90-gallon aquarium (with a 4-foot footprint) as juveniles, though a 125-gallon or larger system is ideal for a fully grown adult to provide adequate swimming space. Water Parameters: Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C) Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.020 – 1.025 pH: 8.1 – 8.4 Water Quality: Like most surgeonfish, they thrive in well-oxygenated water with strong filtration and stable parameters. Aquascaping: Provide open swimming lanes combined with robust live rock formations containing caves and crevices for grazing and retreating. 3. Diet & Feeding Natural Diet: Primarily herbivorous, spending much of their day grazing on microalgae and filamentous algae off rocks. Captive Diet: Their diet must be rich in plant matter to keep their immune system strong. Feed them regular servings of dried Nori (seaweed), spirulina flakes, and marine algae-based pellets. They will also readily accept meaty foods like mysis shrimp and brine shrimp as part of a varied diet. 4. Reef Compatibility Status: Reef Safe Behavior: They are completely safe with corals, invertebrates, and clams. They will not bother sessile inverts, making them a fantastic addition to mixed reef aquariums. 5. Temperament & Tank Mates Temperament: Peaceful to semi-aggressive. They are generally peaceful community fish, though they can become territorial toward other tangs or fish with a similar body shape or coloration—especially if introduced after established tank mates. Compatibility: Excellent for community reef setups alongside clowns, wrasses, anthias, and peaceful angelfish. Avoid housing them with other Acanthurus tangs in smaller systems to minimize aggression.
