Harlequin Sweetlips (Plectorhinchus chaetodonoides): The Harlequin Sweetlips is one of the most visually striking juvenile reef fish in the trade, famous for its bold polka‑dot pattern and exaggerated “fluttering” swimming style. As it matures, the fish undergoes a dramatic color transformation and becomes a large, powerful reef predator best suited for spacious, well‑filtered marine systems. Appearance Juveniles display a white body with chocolate‑brown spots and oversized fins that they wave in a mimicry dance believed to deter predators. Adults shift to a silver‑brown body with darker banding and a more robust, grunt‑like profile. Maximum size reaches 24–30 inches, making long‑term housing a major consideration. Natural Habitat Harlequin Sweetlips are found throughout the Indo‑Pacific, including Indonesia, the Maldives, Papua New Guinea, and the Great Barrier Reef. They inhabit lagoon reefs, coral slopes, and sheltered coastal areas, often hiding under ledges or among branching corals as juveniles. Aquarium Requirements This species requires a large, mature marine system with excellent filtration and ample swimming space. Minimum tank size: 180 gallons for juveniles; 300+ gallons for adults Aquascape: Open swimming areas with caves and shaded retreats Lighting: Moderate Water quality: Highly stable; low nutrients preferred Lid: Recommended, as juveniles can dart when startled Because of their eventual size and bioload, they are not suitable for nano or mid‑size reef tanks. Diet & Feeding Harlequin Sweetlips are carnivores with specialized feeding needs, especially when young. Juveniles often require live foods to start eating, such as: Live ghost shrimp Live blackworms Live brine shrimp (starter only) Once established, they can transition to frozen foods: Mysis shrimp Chopped silversides Krill Clam or squid pieces Adults accept larger meaty foods and may eventually take high‑quality carnivore pellets. Feed 2–3 times daily for juveniles; 1–2 times daily for adults. Temperament & Compatibility Harlequin Sweetlips are generally peaceful, but their adult size makes them incompatible with small tankmates. Safe with larger community fish Will prey on small fish, shrimp, crabs, and other invertebrates Not reef‑safe long‑term due to predation risk Juveniles are shy; adults become more confident and bold Why They Stand Out One of the most beautiful juvenile fish in the hobby Dramatic color and behavior transformation as they grow A centerpiece species for large FOWLR displays Highly engaging swimming behavior in early life stages
