Magnificent Foxface

Magnificent Foxface (Siganus magnificus), also commonly known as the Magnificent Rabbitfish: 1. Appearance & Coloration Coloration: They feature a striking, bright yellow body contrasted by a bold black-and-white diagonal facial mask across the eyes and a distinct chocolate-brown or black saddle-like band across the rear portion of the body near the tail. Venomous Spines: Like all rabbitfish (Siganus species), their dorsal, pelvic, and anal fins contain venomous glands capable of delivering a painful sting (similar to a severe bee sting). Use caution during maintenance. Size: They grow to an adult size of about 8 to 9 inches (20 to 23 cm). 2. Tank Requirements Minimum Tank Size: Requires a spacious aquarium of at least 100 to 125 gallons to accommodate their adult size and active swimming behavior. Water Parameters: Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C) Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.020 – 1.025 pH: 8.1 – 8.4 Aquascaping: Provide open swimming space combined with generous live rock formations containing caves and hiding spots where they can retreat when startled or to sleep at night (they often change to a mottled camouflage pattern when resting). 3. Diet & Feeding Natural Diet: Primarily herbivorous, grazing on various types of macroalgae and microalgae throughout the day. Captive Diet: They are fantastic algae grazers that will actively help control nuisance algae in the aquarium. Supplement their diet regularly with sheets of dried Nori (seaweed), spirulina flakes, and vegetable pellets, along with occasional meaty offerings like mysis shrimp. 4. Reef Compatibility Status: Reef Safe (With Caution) Behavior: While they generally ignore stony corals and most soft corals, some individuals have been known to occasionally nip at the flesh of large-polyp stony (LPS) corals or zoanthids if they aren't kept well-fed on plant matter. 5. Temperament & Tank Mates Temperament: Generally peaceful with most community fish, though they can display territorial aggression toward other rabbitfish or fish with similar body shapes. Compatibility: Excellent tank mates for larger community and mixed reef setups. They get along well with tangs, large angelfish, wrasses, and clowns. Their venomous spines provide them with great natural defense against aggressive tank mates.
