McCosker's Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus mccoskeri): 1. Appearance & Coloration Coloration: Males display vibrant patterns of bright orange, red, and yellow, accented with striking electric blue or violet stripes along their body and fins. Females are more subdued, typically presenting a uniform reddish-orange or pinkish hue. Flasher Behavior: Males get their common name from their ability to rapidly "flash" or intensify their brilliant colors and flare their elongated dorsal fins during courtship displays or when establishing dominance. Size: They are a small, slender species reaching an adult size of about 2.5 to 3 inches (6 to 8 cm), making them ideal for nano or mid-sized reef tanks. 2. Native Origin & Habitat Geography: Native to the Western Indian Ocean, including the Comoro Islands, East Africa, and the Red Sea. Environment: Found inhabiting coral reef slopes, rubble zones, and outer reef areas, usually hanging close to the substrate or hovering just above the reef structure. 3. Tank Requirements Minimum Tank Size: Requires an aquarium of at least 30 to 50 gallons to provide ample swimming room and established microhabitats. Tank Cover: A tight-fitting lid or fine mesh screen top is mandatory, as all flasher wrasses are notorious jumpers when startled or during courtship. Substrate & Rockwork: Provide plenty of live rock with caves and crevices for hiding and sleeping. Unlike some other wrasses, they do not require a deep sand bed to sleep in, instead often resting in crevices or spinning a protective mucous cocoon at night. 4. Diet & Feeding Natural Diet: Carnivorous zooplanktivores that feed on copepods, amphipods, fish eggs, and tiny crustaceans drifting in the water column. Captive Diet: Very easy to feed. They readily accept a varied diet of high-quality flake and pellet foods, frozen cyclops, enriched brine shrimp, and finely chopped mysis shrimp. Feed them small amounts 2 to 3 times a day. 5. Reef Compatibility Status: Reef Safe Behavior: Completely safe with corals, anemones, clams, and decorative invertebrates. They will not nip at sessile reef life or disturb the aquascape. 6. Temperament & Tank Mates Temperament: Peaceful and active. They spend most of their day darting gracefully through the water column. Compatibility: Excellent community fish for peaceful reef tanks. They can be kept as a single specimen or in a harem consisting of one male and multiple females (best introduced simultaneously). Avoid housing them with overly aggressive or boisterous fish that might bully them or outcompete them during feeding time.
