Midas Blenny (Africa)

African Midas Blenny (Ecsenius midas), also commonly known as the Golden Blenny or Midas Blenny: 1. Appearance & Coloration Coloration: They boast a vibrant, luminous golden-yellow or orange body. Their eyes are highlighted by a striking blue ring, and their dorsal and caudal fins often feature subtle blue or purple hues. Morphology: Unlike many rock-dwelling blennies, they possess an elongated, sleek body and are strong, graceful swimmers that spend a lot of time hovering in the water column rather than perching on the rocks. Size: They grow to an adult size of about 4 to 5 inches (10 to 13 cm) in length. 2. Tank Requirements Minimum Tank Size: Requires at least a 30 to 50-gallon aquarium to provide adequate swimming room and open water space. Water Parameters: Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C) Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.020 – 1.025 pH: 8.1 – 8.4 Aquascaping: Provide plenty of live rock with natural caves, crevices, and small holes where the blenny can retreat to sleep or hide when startled. Tank Cover: A tight-fitting lid or mesh screen is essential, as they are capable jumpers. 3. Diet & Feeding Natural Diet: Primarily herbivorous/omnivorous, feeding on microalgae, benthic film, and small zooplankton suspended in the water column. Captive Diet: They are generally easy to feed in captivity. Offer a varied diet consisting of high-quality marine flakes, spirulina, and nori, supplemented with meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and cyclops. 4. Reef Compatibility Status: Reef Safe Behavior: Completely safe with corals, clams, and sessile invertebrates. They will not nip at stony or soft corals, making them ideal inhabitants for mixed reef displays. 5. Temperament & Tank Mates Temperament: Generally peaceful and charismatic, though they can occasionally show mild territorial aggression toward other similar-looking blennies or bottom-dwelling fish with a similar body shape. Compatibility: Excellent community fish that gets along well with peaceful tank mates like clowns, gobies, dartfish, and peaceful wrasses. Their striking yellow coloration also makes them fantastic visual contrasts against blue or red fish.
