The Mystery Wrasse (Pseudocheilinus ocellatus) is a small, vividly colored, semi‑aggressive reef wrasse prized for its magenta body, white bars, and signature black tail‑spot. It thrives in mature, rock‑rich reef systems and is one of the hardier members of its genus. 🐠 Identity & Appearance The Mystery Wrasse is a Western–Central Pacific species collected primarily from the Marshall Islands, Vanuatu, and Fiji. It lives on deeper outer reef slopes (about 60–130 ft). Key visual traits: • Deep magenta‑to‑pink body with yellow belly tones • Fine horizontal striping on the head • Five faint white vertical bars (more visible in juveniles/subadults) • Distinct black ocellus at the base of the tail — its defining mark • Yellow/orange facial accents Adult size: 4–5 inches. 🌍 Natural Habitat Mystery Wrasses inhabit coral‑rich reef slopes with abundant rockwork and microfauna. Their deeper habitat explains their historically high price and late appearance in the aquarium trade. 🧪 Aquarium Requirements Difficulty: Moderate — hardy once established, but requires the right environment. Tank size: • 30–50 gallons minimum, though 55+ is preferred for stability and territory. Essential setup: • Extensive live rock with caves and crevices for hunting and hiding (non‑negotiable). • Mature system (12+ months) with stable parameters and microfauna. • Tight lid — they are strong jumpers. • Moderate to strong flow to prevent suffocation in their nighttime mucus cocoon. Water parameters: • 72–78°F, pH 8.0–8.4. 🍤 Diet Mystery Wrasses are carnivorous micro‑predators. They readily eat: • Frozen mysis and enriched brine shrimp • Copepods and amphipods • Small pest invertebrates (flatworms, pyramidellid snails) A refugium for pod production is beneficial. 🤝 Temperament & Compatibility • Semi‑aggressive, especially toward similar wrasses (never mix with Six‑Line Wrasses). • Generally peaceful with clownfish, gobies, dartfish, firefish, and other non‑wrasse reef fish. • May prey on small ornamental inverts as it matures. • Best added last to avoid territorial disputes. 💤 Behavior • Diurnal; sleeps in a mucus cocoon within rockwork. • Often disappears into rockwork for days when first introduced — normal for the species. 📏 Lifespan • 5–10+ years with proper care.
