One-Spot Foxface (Siganus unimaculatus): 1. Appearance & Coloration Coloration: They share the same brilliant golden-yellow body and stark white front face divided by a dark eye-stripe as the standard Yellow Foxface, but are distinguished by a prominent, distinct black spot surrounded by a white halo located on the upper rear flank near the dorsal fin. Venomous Spines: Like all rabbitfish (Siganus species), their dorsal, pelvic, and anal spines contain venom glands capable of delivering a painful sting if mishandled. Size: They grow to an adult size of about 8 to 9 inches (20 to 23 cm). 2. Native Origin & Habitat Geography: They are native to the western Pacific Ocean, found around the Philippines, the Ryukyu Islands of Japan, Taiwan, and parts of the Indo-Malayan region. Environment: Inhabits rich coral reefs, sheltered lagoons, and outer reef slopes. 3. Tank Requirements Minimum Tank Size: Requires a spacious aquarium of at least 100 to 125 gallons to accommodate their adult size and active swimming behavior. Water Parameters: Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C) Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.020 – 1.025 pH: 8.1 – 8.4 Aquascaping: Provide plenty of open swimming room alongside live rock caves and crevices for them to hide or sleep. Like other foxfaces, they will adopt a mottled camouflage pattern when resting at night or stressed. 4. Diet & Feeding Natural Diet: Dedicated herbivores that spend their day grazing on microalgae and macroalgae. Captive Diet: Excellent algae consumers that help control nuisance growth. Supplement their diet regularly with sheets of dried Nori (seaweed), spirulina flakes, and vegetable pellets, along with occasional meaty offerings. 5. Reef Compatibility Status: Reef Safe (With Caution) Behavior: Generally safe with corals, though underfed individuals may occasionally sample the flesh of large-polyp stony (LPS) corals or zoanthids. 6. Temperament & Tank Mates Temperament: Peaceful with general community fish, though they can display territoriality toward other rabbitfish or similarly shaped yellow fish. Compatibility: Great for large mixed-species and reef setups. They mix well with tangs, large angels, wrasses, and clowns, and their venom provides built-in protection against aggressive tank mates.
