The Orange Firefish Goby (Nemateleotris magnifica) is a small, peaceful, beginner‑friendly reef fish known for its striking white‑to‑orange gradient body, elongated dorsal fin, and hovering behavior. It is fully reef‑safe, hardy once settled, and ideal for nano to mid‑size reef tanks. 🐠 Identity & Appearance The Orange Firefish Goby features a pearlescent white head, yellow midsection, and a vibrant orange‑red tail, with a long, whip‑like first dorsal spine used for communication and threat displays. Adults reach about 3 inches in length. Key traits: • Slender, dart‑shaped body • Prominent eyes adapted for spotting plankton • Signature elongated dorsal spine • Bright gradient coloration 🌍 Natural Habitat Native to the Indo‑Pacific, including East Africa through Hawaii, Firefish inhabit reef slopes and rubble zones at depths from 6 to 230 feet, hovering above burrows and feeding on plankton in the current. 🧪 Aquarium Requirements Difficulty: Easy–Moderate — hardy but prone to jumping. Minimum tank size: • 20 gallons for a single fish • 30+ gallons for a pair Ideal setup: • Plenty of hiding spots (caves, crevices) • Fine sand for burrowing behavior • Moderate flow to mimic natural hovering conditions • Tight‑fitting lid — Firefish are one of the most notorious jumpers in the hobby Water parameters: • Temp: 72–78°F • Salinity: 1.023–1.025 • pH: 8.1–8.4 • Nitrate: <20 ppm 🍤 Diet Firefish are planktivores, feeding on zooplankton in the wild. In captivity they accept: • Frozen mysis • Enriched brine shrimp • Cyclops • Finely chopped seafood • High‑quality marine pellets/flakes (with training) Multiple small feedings per day help maintain health and coloration. 🤝 Temperament & Compatibility • Peaceful, but can be territorial with their own kind unless paired • Excellent community fish • Completely reef‑safe with corals and ornamental inverts • Shy at first but becomes bold once settled 💤 Behavior • Hovers mid‑water facing the current • Darts into burrows when startled (“dartfish” behavior) • Uses dorsal spine for signaling and wedging into crevices • Extremely prone to jumping when stressed or startled 📏 Size & Lifespan • Adult size: ~3 inches • Lifespan: 3–5 years with proper care
