Pajama Cardinalfish (Sphaeramia nematoptera), also commonly known as the Spotted Cardinalfish: 1. Appearance & Coloration Coloration: They feature a distinctive, multicolored body pattern. The front half is a pale silvery-green or yellow, while the rear half is a bright silver-white adorned with prominent reddish-brown polka dots. A thick, dark vertical band wraps around the middle of the body like a belt. Morphology: They possess large eyes adapted for low-light conditions, a compressed rounded body, and elongated dorsal fins. Size: They grow to an adult size of about 3 inches (7.5 cm). 2. Native Origin & Habitat Geography: They are native to the Indo-West Pacific region, widely distributed from Indonesia and the Philippines to the Great Barrier Reef and Vanuatu. Environment: Found in shallow, protected lagoons, sheltered bays, and outer reef drop-offs, frequently hovering in groups among branching corals or sea urchin spines for protection. 3. Tank Requirements Minimum Tank Size: Requires an aquarium of at least 30 gallons to provide stable water conditions and comfortable swimming space. Water Parameters: Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C) Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.020 – 1.025 pH: 8.1 – 8.4 Aquascaping: Provide plenty of live rock arranged with caves, overhangs, and dim crevices where they can retreat or hover during the day, as they prefer gentle water movement and subdued lighting. 4. Diet & Feeding Natural Diet: Nocturnal or crepuscular predators that feed on zooplankton, small benthic crustaceans, and microfauna. Captive Diet: Very hardy and easy to feed in captivity. Offer a varied carnivorous diet consisting of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, and high-quality small pellets or flakes. 5. Reef Compatibility Status: Reef Safe Behavior: Completely safe with corals, clams, anemones, and all sessile invertebrates. They will not nip at corals or disturb the aquascape. 6. Temperament & Tank Mates Temperament: Extremely peaceful, slow-moving, and docile. They are social schooling fish that thrive when kept in small groups (3 or more) in adequately sized systems. Compatibility: Ideal community fish for peaceful setups. They pair exceptionally well with docile tank mates such as gobies, dartfish, blennies, and small clowns. Avoid keeping them with aggressive, hyperactive, or boisterous fish that will outcompete them during feeding time.
