The Purple Firefish (Nemateleotris decora) is a peaceful, hardy, and brilliantly colored dartfish known for its purple‑to‑magenta gradient body, elegant dorsal fin, and calm hovering behavior. It’s one of the most beginner‑friendly reef fish—as long as the tank is tightly covered, because it is an extreme jumper. 🐠 Species Identity & Appearance • Scientific name: Nemateleotris decora • Common names: Purple Firefish, Elegant Firefish, Decorated Dartfish • Adult size: 3–4 inches • Coloration: • Pale white/yellow anterior • Violet–purple midsection • Magenta/red tail and fins • Long, expressive first dorsal spine used for signaling • Why it’s popular: Striking coloration, peaceful nature, and graceful hovering posture. 🌍 Natural Habitat • Range: Indo‑Pacific & Western Pacific reefs • Depth: 25–70 meters in the wild (deeper than many common reef fish) • Environment: • Outer reef slopes, rubble zones • Lives near burrows or crevices for instant retreat 🧠 Behavior & Temperament • Temperament: Very peaceful, shy, easily startled • Reef‑safe: Yes — completely safe with corals and inverts • Social structure: • Keep one per tank, unless you have a bonded pair (30+ gallons recommended for pairs) • Jumping risk: Exceptionally high — even tiny gaps are dangerous. A sealed lid is mandatory. 🏡 Aquarium Requirements • Minimum tank size: • 20 gallons for a single fish • 30 gallons for a bonded pair • Aquascape: • Multiple caves and crevices • Sandy bottom preferred • Moderate flow (not blasting their perch) • Lighting: • Moderate; avoid sudden bright changes • Water parameters: • Temp: 72–79°F • pH: 8.1–8.4 • Salinity: 1.020–1.025 SG • Nitrate: <10 ppm • Phosphate: <0.10 ppm 🍽️ Diet • Type: Planktivorous carnivore • Foods: • Frozen mysis • Enriched brine • Cyclops • Finely chopped meaty foods • Small pellets (0.5–1 mm) once settled • Feeding frequency: 2–3 small meals daily to match natural plankton‑picking behavior 🧬 Hardiness & Lifespan • Lifespan: 3–5 years with good care • Hardiness: • Generally hardy once acclimated • Sensitive to aggressive tankmates and sudden stress • Captive‑bred availability: Yes — easier to acclimate and often more robust 🪸 Compatibility Good tankmates: • Clownfish • Gobies • Small wrasses • Peaceful community reef fish Avoid: • Aggressive or fast‑moving species • Dottybacks, large wrasses, hawkfish • Any fish that may chase or outcompete them for food 🧪 Acclimation & Care Notes • Drip acclimate 30–45 minutes • Keep lights dim for the first day • Provide a quiet environment during introduction • Quarantine recommended 2–4 weeks to prevent disease introduction
