The Pyramid Butterflyfish (Hemitaurichthys polylepis) is one of the very few butterflyfish considered genuinely reef‑safe, making it a standout choice for SPS and mixed reefs where other butterflies would be destructive. It’s peaceful, hardy, and striking in groups — a rare combination in the butterflyfish world. 🐠 Identity & Appearance The Pyramid Butterflyfish gets its name from the bright white triangular “pyramid” patch on each side, set against a golden‑yellow body with a dark chocolate head mask. Notable traits: • Deep, laterally compressed butterflyfish body • White pyramid patch (highly visible even at distance) • Yellow fins and tail • Black facial mask • Grows to 7–8 inches They are visually bold without being aggressive — ideal for display reefs. 🌍 Natural Habitat Native to the Central and Western Pacific, including Hawaii, Tahiti, and Micronesia, Pyramid Butterflies inhabit open water above reef slopes, often in large mid‑water schools. Their natural feeding behavior is the key to their reef safety. ⭐ Why They’re a Rare Reef‑Safe Butterfly Most butterflyfish are coralivores — they nip polyps, LPS flesh, soft corals, and clams. Pyramid Butterflies are planktivores. They feed primarily on: • Zooplankton in the water column • Small drifting invertebrates Because they do not graze on benthic surfaces, they almost never show interest in coral tissue. This makes them one of the only butterflyfish species routinely kept in SPS‑dominant reefs with excellent long‑term success. This reef‑safe reliability is what makes them so special. 🧪 Aquarium Requirements Difficulty: Moderate — hardy once acclimated. Tank size: • 125 gallons minimum for a single • 180+ gallons recommended for groups Environment: • Open swimming space • Strong, stable flow • Mature reef system • High oxygenation They are active, open‑water swimmers and do best in tanks with long horizontal runs. 🍤 Diet As planktivores, they accept a wide range of foods: • Frozen mysis • Calanus • Enriched brine • Small marine pellets • Reef plankton blends Frequent small feedings mimic their natural grazing style. 🤝 Temperament & Compatibility • Peaceful • Excellent in groups (pairs, trios, or small shoals) • Safe with all corals • Safe with clams • Compatible with tangs, wrasses, anthias, gobies, and angels Avoid mixing with aggressive butterflies or large, territorial tangs in smaller systems. 🧬 Hardiness Pyramid Butterflies are one of the hardiest butterflyfish species, especially compared to coral‑picking genera like Chaetodon. They ship reasonably well, adapt to captive diets quickly, and thrive long‑term in stable reef environments.
