🌟 Radiant Sea Urchin — Astropyga radiata (Common trade name: Blue‑Spotted Sea Urchin, Rainbow Urchin, Fire Urchin) The Radiant Sea Urchin is one of the most visually striking echinoderms found in tropical Indo‑Pacific waters. Its vivid red radial bands and electric blue spots make it a standout species for display aquaria and educational exhibits, though it requires careful handling due to its long, sharp spines. 🌏 Distribution & Habitat Range: Indo‑Pacific — from the Red Sea and East Africa to Hawaii and northern Australia. Habitat: Sandy or rubble zones near coral reefs, lagoons, and reef slopes. Depth: Typically 3–30 meters. Behavior: Nocturnal grazer; hides under ledges or in crevices during daylight. 🎨 Appearance Coloration: Deep red body with five radiating red bands lined by bright blue spots. Spines: Long, thin, and dark red to black; capable of delivering a painful puncture. Central structure: Red periproctal cone (anal cone) surrounded by the star‑like pattern. Size: Up to 20 cm (8 inches) in diameter including spines. Texture: Smooth test with fine granules between the bands. 🧠 Behavior & Ecology Diet: Detritus, algae, and small organic particles. Activity: Primarily nocturnal; moves slowly across substrate using tube feet. Defense: Sharp spines and venomous pedicellariae deter predators. Role in ecosystem: Helps control algal growth and recycle organic matter. 💧 Aquarium Care Tank size: Minimum 75 gallons for stability and space. Substrate: Fine sand or rubble for natural movement. Lighting: Moderate; avoid intense spotlighting. Water parameters: Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C) Salinity: 1.024–1.026 pH: 8.1–8.4 Compatibility: Peaceful with most reef inhabitants. Avoid aggressive fish or large wrasses that may nip spines. Reef‑safe but may dislodge loose coral frags while grazing. 🩺 Handling & Safety Handle only with tools or thick gloves — spines are sharp and can break easily. Avoid sudden temperature or salinity changes; sensitive to rapid shifts. Long‑lived when provided stable conditions and adequate algae. ⚠️ Venom & Defense The urchin’s pedicellariae (tiny jaw‑like structures between the spines) and spines can deliver mild venom. The venom is used for defense against predators, not active hunting. A sting may cause: Sharp pain at the puncture site Local redness or swelling Occasionally mild numbness or irritation 🩺 Handling Precautions Always use tongs or thick gloves when moving or cleaning near them. Avoid sudden contact — the spines are brittle and can break off easily. If stung: Immerse the area in hot (not scalding) water for 30–45 minutes to denature venom proteins. Remove any visible spine fragments carefully. Seek medical attention if pain persists or swelling spreads. 🧠 In Context The venom is comparable to other Diadematid urchins — defensive, not lethal. In aquaria, they’re safe as long as you don’t handle them directly. Their striking coloration actually serves as a warning signal to potential predators.
