The Radiant Wrasse (Halichoeres iridis) is one of the most visually stunning sand‑diving wrasses — a glowing blend of neon orange, magenta, and electric green — and a peaceful, reef‑safe addition for tanks with a proper sand bed. It’s hardy once established, active but not aggressive, and a favorite among reef keepers who want color without chaos. Identity & Appearance Native to the Western Indian Ocean, especially South Africa and Mozambique, the Radiant Wrasse is instantly recognizable. Key visual traits: • Bright orange body with a smooth gradient into magenta and red tones • Iridescent green and blue facial lines • Electric green dorsal stripe running from head to tail • Deep red tail fin • Adult size: 4–5 inches Under reef lighting, they truly glow — hence the name “Radiant.” Natural Habitat Radiant Wrasses inhabit sandy reef flats and rubble zones, where they forage for tiny invertebrates and dive into sand when threatened. Their environment is a mix of open patches and rockwork, which translates directly to their aquarium needs. Behavior & Temperament This species is known for being: • Peaceful • Active but not frantic • Non‑aggressive toward tankmates • Reef‑safe with corals and clams They spend their day weaving through rockwork and cruising the sand line, hunting for micro‑prey. At night, they bury themselves in sand to sleep. They are excellent community wrasses and rarely cause trouble. Aquarium Requirements Radiant Wrasses thrive when their natural behaviors are supported. They need: • 50+ gallon tanks • Fine sand bed (2+ inches) for burrowing • Rockwork with caves and crevices • Covered tanks — they jump • Mature systems with stable parameters Without sand, they become stressed and may not survive long‑term. Diet In the wild, Radiant Wrasses hunt small invertebrates. In captivity they accept: • Frozen mysis • Enriched brine • Copepods • Small pellets • Reef plankton blends They appreciate frequent small feedings, especially during acclimation. Reef Safety Radiant Wrasses are fully reef‑safe. They do not nip corals, do not bother clams, and generally ignore ornamental shrimp once settled. Their diet focuses on microfauna, not larger inverts. Hardiness Once acclimated, Radiant Wrasses are very hardy. Their main vulnerabilities are: • Shipping stress • Lack of sand • Aggressive tankmates • Jumping during acclimation Given the right environment, they become long‑lived, reliable reef citizens.
