The Rainfordi Goby (Koumansetta rainfordi) — also known as the Court Jester Goby — is a peaceful, algae‑grazing nano‑reef favorite with bright orange stripes, green‑olive body tones, and a gentle hovering behavior that makes it ideal for mature, stable reef aquariums.** It’s small, reef‑safe, and visually striking, but requires consistent feeding and excellent water quality. 🐟 Identity & Appearance The Rainfordi Goby is a slender, bottom‑oriented species with: Olive‑green body overlaid with bright orange horizontal stripes A red‑orange facial mask with yellow and white accents Small black spotting along the flanks (varies by individual) Maximum size ~2.5–3 inches Its coloration stays vivid in captivity, especially in stable, algae‑rich systems. 🌍 Natural Habitat Native to the Western Pacific, including the Philippines, Fiji, and the Great Barrier Reef. Found hovering over coral‑associated sand flats at 3–30 m depth, grazing microalgae and picking at tiny benthic invertebrates. 🧪 Aquarium Requirements Minimum tank size: 10 gallons (20+ gallons strongly preferred for stability) Aquascape: Sand bed for grazing Rockwork with caves and microalgae growth Open areas for hovering Water parameters: Temp: 72–78°F pH: 8.1–8.4 Salinity: 1.020–1.025 dKH: 8–12 A mature tank with established microfauna dramatically improves long‑term success. 🍤 Diet & Feeding Rainfordi Gobies are omnivores with a strong preference for benthic algae and small invertebrates. In captivity they accept: Live copepods (excellent for acclimation) Mysis shrimp Enriched brine shrimp Small prepared omnivore foods Wild specimens often starved historically due to algae‑only feeding, but captive‑bred individuals readily accept a wider diet and are significantly hardier. Feed 1–2× daily, ensuring food reaches the bottom. 🤝 Temperament & Compatibility Peaceful, reef‑safe, and non‑aggressive May become territorial toward other gobies/blennies in small tanks Excellent with corals and inverts Ideal for nano reefs with gentle tankmates They spend most of their time hovering near the substrate, grazing and exploring. ⭐ Why Hobbyists Love This Species Bright, unmistakable orange‑striped pattern Nano‑reef friendly and low bioload Natural hair algae grazer (especially helpful in small systems) Captive‑bred availability has made them far more reliable and hardy Peaceful, active, and visually engaging without being boisterous
