Red Cynarina - WYSIWYG item The Red Cynarina (often Cynarina lacrymalis, sometimes sold as “Button Coral” or “Meat Coral”) is a large‑polyp LPS coral known for its inflated, jelly‑like tissue, deep red coloration, and dramatic, almost gemstone‑like appearance. It’s one of the most visually striking single‑polyp corals you can display in a reef tank. ❤️ Identity & Appearance Red Cynarinas are unmistakable. They look like living jewels on the sandbed. Key traits include: • Deep red to ruby‑red tissue, often with metallic sheen • Large, inflated polyp—sometimes 6–10 inches when fully expanded • Radiating skeletal ridges visible beneath the translucent flesh • Glossy, almost “wet glass” texture • Subtle striping or marbling depending on morph • Strong fluorescence under blue LEDs When fully puffed up, they resemble a glowing, fleshy gemstone. 🌱 Growth & Behavior Cynarinas are slow growers, but they’re expressive and interactive. You’ll see: • Daily inflation/deflation cycles • Strong feeding response • Tissue expanding dramatically when happy • Occasional “pouting” if disturbed or shaded They’re a single‑polyp coral, so growth is about size and fullness rather than budding. 💡 Lighting Requirements Red Cynarinas prefer low to moderate light. • PAR 50–120 is ideal • Too much light can cause bleaching or tissue recession • Lower light often enhances the deep red coloration They’re perfect for shaded areas or the sandbed under rock overhangs. 🌊 Flow Preferences Flow should be low and indirect. • Gentle movement helps prevent detritus buildup • Avoid direct jets—can cause tissue tears • Stable, soft flow keeps the coral inflated and healthy Their large, fleshy tissue is easily irritated by strong flow. 🍤 Feeding & Nutrition Cynarinas are excellent feeders and benefit greatly from supplemental nutrition. They accept: • Mysis • Brine • LPS pellets • Reef plankton • Small meaty blends Feeding 1–2× weekly improves color, size, and long‑term health. 🧪 Water Parameters & Hardiness Red Cynarinas are moderately hardy, but they do best in stable systems. They prefer: • Moderate nutrients (NO₃ 5–15 ppm, PO₄ 0.03–0.1 ppm) • Stable alkalinity (8–9 dKH) • Clean sandbed or smooth substrate • No sudden changes in light or flow They’re sensitive to: • Rapid parameter swings • Direct flow • Aggressive neighbors ⚔️ Aggression & Spacing Cynarinas are not aggressive, but they are delicate. • Give 3–4 inches of space • Keep away from sweepers (euphyllia, favia, echinata, etc.) • Avoid sharp rock edges that can damage tissue Their large, soft body makes them vulnerable to stings and abrasion. ⭐ Why Reefers Love It • Deep, luxurious red coloration • Huge, inflated, showpiece polyp • Gem‑like appearance under blues • Great for low‑light zones • A dramatic, centerpiece LPS
