The Red Goniopora (often called the Red Flowerpot Coral) is a vibrant, flowing LPS coral known for its long, waving polyps, deep red coloration, and mesmerizing movement. Modern strains are far hardier than the old “impossible” Goniopora reputation, making this coral a popular centerpiece in mixed reefs. Identity & Appearance Red Goniopora (Goniopora sp.) is instantly recognizable for its dramatic, flower‑like polyps. Typical features include: • Deep red to crimson polyps • Long, elegant tentacles that sway constantly • Round, daisy‑like tips • A dome‑shaped skeletal base • Full, bushy extension when happy Under blue lighting, the red tones glow with a warm, velvety intensity. Behavior & Movement Red Goniopora is all about motion. When healthy, it: • Extends its polyps several inches • Creates a soft, waving “garden” effect • Responds to flow direction with gentle swaying • Retracts quickly if disturbed This movement makes it a standout in LPS‑dominant tanks. Lighting & Flow Red Goniopora thrives in moderate light and moderate flow. Lighting: • PAR 80–150 is ideal • Too much light can cause bleaching or retraction • Too little can dull the red coloration Flow: • Gentle, indirect movement • Enough to keep the polyps swaying • Avoid strong, direct blasts that damage tissue Placement Best placement is: • Mid‑level rockwork or lower areas with stable flow • Open space where polyps can extend fully • Away from aggressive neighbors with long sweepers Goniopora appreciate stability and dislike being bumped or shaded. Feeding Modern Red Goniopora respond extremely well to feeding. They benefit from: • Phytoplankton • Reef roids • Micro‑zooplankton • Fine powdered coral foods Feeding 2–3× per week improves growth, color, and long‑term success. Hardiness & Care Today’s aquacultured Red Goniopora are much hardier than wild‑collected varieties of the past. They thrive in: • Stable alkalinity (8–9 dKH) • Moderate nutrients (not ULNS) • Mature, stable systems They can still be sensitive to: • Rapid parameter swings • Excessive flow • Sudden lighting changes But with consistent care, they grow well and live long. Why Reefers Love It • Incredible red coloration • Graceful, constant movement • High visual impact • Much easier than older Goniopora strains • Perfect for LPS gardens and centerpiece zones
