🛵 Red Scooter Dragonet Synchiropus stellatus — Facts & Care Guide 🌈 Species Overview A striking dragonet with a reddish‑brown body, white spotting, and bold fin patterns resembling a scooter’s silhouette when gliding. Closely related to the Mandarin Goby and Ruby Red Dragonet, sharing the same family (Callionymidae). Commonly called Scooter Blenny, though it is not a true blenny. Native to the Indo‑Pacific, especially around Indonesia, the Philippines, and Australia. 📏 Size & Lifespan Max size: ~3 inches (7–8 cm). Lifespan: 3–5 years in stable, mature reef systems. 🧪 Temperament & Behavior Peaceful and curious, often seen “scooting” along the substrate in short bursts. Males display a large sail‑like dorsal fin during courtship or dominance displays. Spends most of its time foraging for microfauna on rock and sand surfaces. May show mild territoriality toward other dragonets in small tanks. 🐠 Reef Safety Reef safe — does not harm corals or beneficial invertebrates. Avoid housing near anemones or large predatory shrimp. Minimum tank size: 30 gallons (larger preferred for pod stability). Setup: Mature reef with abundant live rock and refugium support. Flow: Gentle to moderate; avoid strong currents that disturb grazing. 🍽️ Feeding Requirements Natural Diet Copepods Amphipods Small worms Micro‑crustaceans In Captivity Often reluctant to accept prepared foods. Can be trained to take: Frozen cyclops or enriched brine shrimp Finely shaved mysis Nutramar Ova or small reef blends Best practice: Maintain a self‑sustaining pod population or dose live pods regularly. 🧬 Sexing Males: elongated sailfin and brighter coloration. Females: smaller, rounder body with shorter dorsal fin. 🦠 Disease Resistance Naturally resistant to ich due to thick slime coat. Sensitive to copper and harsh medications — use observe‑only quarantine. 🤝 Tankmates Compatible with: Peaceful gobies, cardinals, firefish, clowns, and small wrasses (non‑pod specialists). Avoid: Aggressive feeders or other dragonets unless in large, pod‑rich systems.
