š“ CaptiveāBred Reidi Seahorse (Hippocampus reidi) ā Species Overview: The Reidi Seahorse, also known as the Brazilian Seahorse, is a graceful, longāsnouted species prized for its vivid coloration and elegant form. Captiveābred individuals are hardy, diseaseāresistant, and wellāadapted to aquarium life, making them ideal for dedicated marine keepers. š Natural Range & Habitat Distribution: Western Atlantic ā from Florida and the Caribbean south to Brazil. Habitat: Shallow coastal reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds. Depth: Typically 2ā20 meters. Behavior: Anchors to vegetation or coral using its prehensile tail; slow, deliberate swimmer. 𧬠Appearance Size: Up to 7 inches (18 cm). Coloration: Highly variable ā yellow, orange, red, brown, black, or speckled. Distinctive traits: Long, slender snout (longer than H. erectus). Smooth, convoluted coronet without sharp spines. Double eye spines and fine body spotting. Slim, elongated body with delicate texture. Captiveābred specimens often show richer colors and more consistent health than wildācaught individuals. š§ Aquarium Care Tank size: Minimum 30 gallons per pair; taller tanks (ā„18") preferred. Water parameters: Temperature: 72ā77°F (22ā25°C) Salinity: 1.020ā1.024 pH: 8.1ā8.4 Flow: Gentle, with calm zones for resting. Lighting: Moderate; avoid intense reef lighting directly on the seahorses. Tankmates: Peaceful, slow feeders only ā avoid aggressive or fast fish. š¤ Diet & Feeding Captiveābred H. reidi are trained to eat frozen foods, simplifying care. Preferred foods: Frozen mysis shrimp (primary diet) Enriched brine shrimp (supplemental) Occasional live copepods or amphipods for enrichment Feed 2ā3 times daily in small portions; target feeding ensures each seahorse gets enough. š Social Behavior & Pairing Reidi Seahorses are peaceful and social, forming monogamous pairs in captivity. Keeping them in pairs or small groups improves feeding response and longāterm survival. Benefits of pairing: Reduced stress and aggression Increased activity and feeding confidence Natural courtship and bonding behavior š£ Reproduction Male brood pouch carries eggs deposited by the female. Gestation: ~14ā21 days. Brood size: 50ā400 fry, depending on pair maturity. Fry are freeāswimming and require specialized rearing systems with live foods (rotifers, copepods). 𩺠Health & Longevity Lifespan: 3ā5 years in captivity with excellent care. Sensitive to poor water quality and sudden temperature changes. Captiveābred individuals show greater disease resistance and adaptability to prepared foods.
