The Jewel of the Reef: Royal Gramma Basslet The Royal Gramma (Gramma loreto), also known as the Fairy Basslet, is a staple of the saltwater aquarium hobby. Native to the deep-water reefs of the Caribbean, this fish looks like it was painted by hand. With its impossible-to-miss two-tone color scheme and peaceful demeanor, it is widely considered the perfect beginner fish for reef aquarists. Key Characteristics & Behaviors Vibrant Two-Tone Contrast: The front half of the Royal Gramma is a rich, iridescent violet-purple, which fades dramatically down the middle of its body into a bright golden-yellow tail. Look closely, and you will also spot a small black dot on its dorsal fin and a thin, dark line running through its eye. The Cave Dweller: Royal Grammas are deeply tied to rocks and caves. In the wild, they often swim upside down along the ceilings of caves or under rock ledges. When first introduced to an aquarium, they will claim a favorite cave as their home base and hover near it, darting out to grab food before slipping right back inside. Territorial but Peaceful: As a rule, Royal Grammas are peaceful tank mates for other reef fish. However, they will passionately defend their chosen cave. If another fish gets too close to their home, the Royal Gramma will open its mouth incredibly wide in a dramatic yawning gesture to threaten the intruder. It is almost always a harmless bluff. Carnivorous Diet: These fish are planktivores, meaning they naturally eat tiny organisms floating in the water column. In captivity, they are not picky eaters. They will readily accept high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, and brine shrimp. Quick Facts Scientific Name: Gramma loreto Maximum Size: Around 3 inches (7.6 cm) Minimum Tank Size: 30 Gallons Reef Safety: 100% reef-safe; they do not bother corals or invertebrates. Lifespan: 3 to 5 years in a well-maintained system. The Imposter Warning: Don't confuse the Royal Gramma with the False Gramma (Royal Dottyback). They look almost identical at a glance, but the Dottyback is notorious for being highly aggressive and predatory. You can easily tell them apart by looking at the color transition: the Royal Gramma has a soft, blended gradient between the purple and yellow, while the aggressive Dottyback has a sharp, distinct line dividing the two colors.
