Sea Hare (Dolabella auricularia) The Sea Hare (Dolabella auricularia), often simply called the Wedge Sea Hare, is a highly prized member of a marine cleanup crew known for its remarkable ability to control nuisance algae. Unlike many other invertebrates, this species is specifically sought after for its voracious appetite for hair algae, making it an excellent, albeit temporary, solution for algae-plagued tanks. Natural Habitat and Appearance Native to the Indo-Pacific region, Dolabella auricularia is commonly found in shallow coastal waters, seagrass beds, and coral reef flats. They are characterized by a soft, somewhat blob-like body with a sloping, wedge-shaped posterior, which gives them their common name. Their coloration can vary, but they often present in mottled shades of brown, green, or yellow-green, allowing them to camouflage effectively against rocks and macroalgae. Behavior and Diet Sea Hares are specialized grazers that spend the majority of their time slowly traversing rockwork and substrate. Their primary characteristics include: Algae Consumption: They are highly efficient at consuming nuisance hair algae and film algae, often clearing areas that other snails or hermit crabs ignore. Behavior: They are peaceful, non-aggressive invertebrates that pose no threat to corals or fish. Defense Mechanism: If startled or dying, they can release a purple ink-like substance, though in the case of Dolabella, this is generally not as toxic to the system as the toxins released by sea cucumbers. Specialized Needs: Because they are such efficient grazers, they often outgrow their food supply; once the nuisance algae is gone, they may starve unless supplemented with dried seaweed (nori). Quick Reference Guide Care at a Glance Common Name: Wedge Sea Hare, Sea Hare Scientific Name: Dolabella auricularia Native Region: Indo-Pacific Temperament: Peaceful Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe Maximum Size: Up to 6–8 inches Diet: Herbivore (specialized in hair algae) Care Level: Moderate (requires supplemental feeding once algae is consumed) Husbandry Tips Dietary Supplementation: Be prepared to provide sheets of nori or dried algae once the Sea Hare has exhausted the natural algae growth in your display. Safety: Ensure all powerhead and overflow intakes are covered with screens, as these soft-bodied creatures can easily be sucked into equipment. Tank Size: Best suited for larger, established aquariums (typically 50+ gallons) that can provide sufficient natural food sources.
