🪸 Australian Strawberry Anemone — Actinia tenebrosa (Common names: Waratah Anemone, Cherry Anemone, Strawberry Anemone) Actinia tenebrosa is a brilliantly colored temperate anemone native to Australia and New Zealand. Although often called the Australian Strawberry Anemone in the aquarium trade, its true common name is Waratah Anemone, referencing the bright red Waratah flower. It is a hardy, intertidal species with striking coloration and fascinating reproductive biology. 🌏 Distribution & Habitat Native to southern and eastern Australia, including Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, and New South Wales Also widespread across New Zealand Found in rock pools, crevices, under boulders, and shaded overhangs in the intertidal zone Highly tolerant of emersion; retracts tentacles and forms a protective jelly‑like dome when exposed to air 🎨 Appearance Typically deep red to crimson, though color morphs range from brownish‑black to maroon depending on light exposure and symbiotic algae density Numerous tentacles arranged in three whorls when expanded underwater Column may feature iridescent blue spherules (acrorhagi) used for territorial defense Size: commonly ~4 cm diameter, though expanded individuals can reach larger sizes depending on conditions 🧬 Biology & Behavior Carnivorous, feeding on small crustaceans, plankton, and organic particles captured with nematocyst‑armed tentacles Viviparous: broods young internally and releases fully formed juveniles through the mouth Forms clonal clusters; genetically identical individuals tolerate close proximity, while unrelated anemones engage in territorial combat using acrorhagi strikes Can also reproduce sexually, producing planktonic larvae that settle away from the parent 🏞️ Ecological Role Important micro‑predator in temperate intertidal ecosystems, controlling small invertebrate populations Provides micro‑habitat for commensal organisms seeking refuge among tentacles Preyed upon by specialized nudibranchs and sea stars 🧪 Aquarium Notes (Temperate Systems Only) Although stunning, Actinia tenebrosa is not a tropical species and requires temperate marine conditions: Temperature: 50–68°F (10–20°C) (inferred from native intertidal range) Strong attachment to rock; prefers shaded crevices Hardy and tolerant of fluctuating conditions, but not compatible with tropical reef tanks
