The Sunset Montipora is a vibrant, encrusting SPS coral known for its glowing orange base, neon green polyps, and ability to add intense contrast to any reef — especially under blue‑heavy lighting. It’s hardy for an SPS, fast‑growing once established, and a staple in mixed‑reef collections. Identity & Appearance Sunset Montipora (Montipora sp.) is one of the most recognizable encrusting montis thanks to its signature color combination: • Bright orange to tangerine base • Neon green polyps that stand out like stars • Smooth, tight encrusting growth pattern • Occasional purple or darker edges depending on lighting and nutrients Under actinic lighting, the orange glows intensely while the green polyps sparkle across the surface. Growth Pattern This coral grows as a thin, fast‑spreading encruster, covering rock, plugs, and even vertical surfaces. Once settled, it can: • Spread rapidly across the aquascape • Form smooth, colorful mats • Create a vivid backdrop for branching SPS Its growth makes it excellent for filling awkward spaces or adding color to shaded rock faces. Lighting & Flow Sunset Montipora thrives in moderate to high light and moderate to strong flow. Lighting: • PAR 150–250 is ideal • Too little light dulls the orange • Too much can cause bleaching or pale patches Flow: • Enough movement to keep the surface clean • Avoid stagnant areas where detritus can settle Good flow helps maintain polyp extension and prevents algae from taking hold. Placement Best placed on: • Mid to upper rockwork • Stable surfaces where it can encrust freely • Areas with consistent flow and light Because it spreads quickly, give it room or isolate it on its own rock if you want to control its footprint. Hardiness & Care Sunset Montipora is considered moderately easy for an SPS. It prefers: • Stable alkalinity (8–9.5 dKH) • Calcium around 420–450 ppm • Magnesium 1250–1350 ppm • Moderate nutrients (not ULNS) It’s more forgiving than Acropora but still sensitive to major swings. Feeding While primarily photosynthetic, it benefits from occasional fine‑particle foods such as: • Reef roids • Phytoplankton • Micro‑zooplankton Feeding isn’t required but can enhance growth and polyp color.
