A Seahorse Aquarium Supply favorite the Yellow Banded Pygmy Possum Wrasse (Wetmorella nigropinnata) is a tiny, secretive, reef‑safe wrasse that slips through rockwork like a miniature predator, making it one of the most charming “micro‑wrasses” available for nano and mid‑size reefs. It’s peaceful, hardy once settled, and completely safe with corals and inverts — a perfect choice for aquarists who want wrasse personality without wrasse aggression. Identity & Appearance This species is part of the Wetmorella group, often called “possum wrasses” because of their furtive, creeping movement. The Pygmy Possum Wrasse is the smallest and most delicate‑looking of the trio. Key visual traits: • Rusty red to orange body with darker vertical banding • Three pale ocelli (eye‑spots) along the dorsal area — the feature that gives it the name triocellata • Large, expressive eyes for peering into crevices • Slender, compressed body built for navigating tight rockwork • Adult size: 2–2.5 inches They are subtle but beautiful, especially when viewed up close. Natural Habitat Found throughout the Indo‑Pacific, Pygmy Possum Wrasses inhabit coral branches, caves, and rubble zones, spending most of their time weaving through rockwork in search of tiny prey. They rarely venture into open water, which is why they adapt so well to aquariums with dense structure. Behavior & Temperament This is one of the most peaceful wrasses in the hobby. They are known for: • Shy, cryptic behavior at first • Gradually becoming bold once they feel secure • Constant “perching and peeking” behavior • Zero aggression toward tankmates • Zero interest in corals or ornamental inverts They coexist beautifully with gobies, blennies, firefish, small wrasses, and peaceful reef fish. They are also excellent for nano reefs, unlike most wrasses. Aquarium Requirements Pygmy Possum Wrasses thrive in: • 20+ gallon tanks (nano‑friendly) • Rock‑heavy aquascapes with caves and crevices • Mature systems with stable parameters • Covered tanks — they can jump when startled They do not require a sand bed for sleeping; they wedge into rockwork at night. Diet In the wild, they hunt tiny crustaceans and microfauna. In captivity they accept: • Frozen mysis • Enriched brine • Copepods • Small pellets • Reef plankton blends They appreciate frequent small feedings, especially early on. Reef Safety This species is fully reef‑safe — one of the safest wrasses available. They do not nip corals, do not bother clams, and do not prey on ornamental shrimp. Their tiny mouth limits them to micro‑prey only. Hardiness Once acclimated, Pygmy Possum Wrasses are very hardy. Their only challenges are: • Initial shyness • Competition for food in tanks with aggressive feeders • Sensitivity to sudden changes or boisterous tankmates Given a calm environment, they thrive for many years.
