The Yellow Coris Wrasse (Halichoeres chrysus) is one of the most reliable “pest‑patrol” wrasses in the hobby — hardy, peaceful, reef‑safe, and constantly on the hunt for nuisance invertebrates. It’s bright, active, and adaptable, making it a favorite for both new and experienced reef keepers. Identity & Appearance Despite the common name, this species is not a true Coris wrasse. It’s a Halichoeres — which is why it stays smaller, behaves better, and is far more reef‑friendly than actual Coris species. Coloration shifts with age: • Juveniles: solid canary yellow with a single black spot on the dorsal fin • Subadults: two additional black spots appear near the tail • Adults: deeper golden tone, spots may fade, body elongates They reach 4–5 inches, making them one of the more manageable wrasses for mixed reefs. Natural Habitat Yellow Coris Wrasses come from Indo‑Pacific reef flats and rubble zones, where they spend their days weaving through rockwork and sand patches hunting tiny prey. At night or when startled, they dive into sand for safety. This sand‑diving behavior is essential to their health in captivity. Behavior & Temperament This species is known for being: • Peaceful • Active but not frantic • Non‑aggressive toward tankmates • Reef‑safe with corals and clams They are excellent community fish and rarely cause trouble — a stark contrast to the notorious Six Line Wrasse. They do require a tight lid, as they are powerful jumpers. Aquarium Requirements Yellow Coris Wrasses thrive in: • 40+ gallon tanks • Fine sand beds (1–2 inches minimum) for burrowing • Rockwork with caves and crevices • Mature systems with stable parameters They acclimate well and are considered one of the hardiest wrasses once settled. Diet In the wild, they hunt constantly for small invertebrates. In captivity they accept: • Frozen mysis • Brine shrimp • Copepods • Small pellets • Reef plankton blends Their natural foraging behavior makes them extremely useful in reef tanks. Spotlight: Pest‑Patrol Specialist This is where the Yellow Coris truly shines. They are known to consume: • Flatworms (including red planaria) • Pyramidellid snails (clam parasites) • Nudibranchs that attack zoanthids • Small bristleworms • Pods and other microfauna While no wrasse is a guaranteed solution, the Yellow Coris is one of the most consistent and dependable pest‑control fish available — without the aggression issues of Six Lines or the fragility of Leopard Wrasses. This makes them a top choice for reef keepers who want natural pest management without sacrificing peace in the tank. Hardiness Yellow Coris Wrasses are very hardy, adapt well to captive diets, and live long lives when provided with sand and a covered tank. Their only real vulnerability is during the first few days, when they may hide in the sand for long periods.
