Yellow Foxface

Yellow Foxface (Siganus vulpinus), also commonly known as the Foxface Rabbitfish: 1. Appearance & Coloration Coloration: They feature a brilliant, solid golden-yellow body contrasted by a stark white front face and head, split by a striking black band running diagonally through the eyes and a dark patch extending under the chin. Venomous Spines: Like all rabbitfish (Siganus species), their dorsal, pelvic, and anal fins are equipped with venomous glands capable of delivering a painful defensive sting if handled or accidentally brushed against. Size: They grow to an adult size of about 8 to 9 inches (20 to 23 cm). 2. Native Origin & Habitat Geography: They are native to the western Pacific Ocean, widely distributed around Indonesia, the Great Barrier Reef, New Caledonia, and the Indo-Malayan region. Environment: Found in shallow, sheltered lagoon reefs and outer reef slopes where they frequently swim among branching corals in small groups or pairs. 3. Tank Requirements Minimum Tank Size: Requires a spacious aquarium of at least 100 to 125 gallons to accommodate their adult size and active swimming style. Water Parameters: Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C) Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.020 – 1.025 pH: 8.1 – 8.4 Aquascaping: Provide open swimming space coupled with ample live rock caves and overhangs. When they rest at night or feel threatened, they naturally adopt a mottled, dark camouflage pattern. 4. Diet & Feeding Natural Diet: Dedicated herbivores that spend their day browsing on benthic algae and microalgae. Captive Diet: Excellent natural algae eaters for the aquarium. Regularly supplement their diet with sheets of dried Nori (seaweed), spirulina flakes, and vegetable pellets, alongside occasional meaty foods. 5. Reef Compatibility Status: Reef Safe (With Caution) Behavior: Generally safe with corals, but like the Magnificent Foxface, an underfed individual may occasionally sample the flesh of large-polyp stony (LPS) corals or zoanthids. 6. Temperament & Tank Mates Temperament: Peaceful with general community fish, though they can display territoriality toward other rabbitfish or similarly shaped yellow fish. Compatibility: Great for large mixed-species and reef setups. They mix well with tangs, large angels, wrasses, and clowns, and their venom provides built-in protection against aggressive tank mates.
