Yellow Head Sleeper Goby

Yellowhead Sleeper Goby (Valenciennea strigata), also commonly known as the Golden-Head Sleeper Goby: 1. Appearance & Coloration Coloration: They feature a bright, pearlescent white to pale gray body contrasted by a striking, vibrant golden-yellow head and face. Size: They typically grow to an adult size of about 6 to 7 inches in length. Body Shape: Elongated, cylindrical body designed for resting on the substrate and burrowing. 2. Tank Requirements Minimum Tank Size: Requires at least a 50 to 75-gallon aquarium with a wide, open sandbed. Water Parameters: Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C) Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.020 – 1.025 pH: 8.1 – 8.4 Substrate & Aquascaping: A deep, fine-grain sandbed is mandatory for their survival, as they continuously sift sand through their gills to feed on micro-organisms. Note: Make sure rock structures are built directly on the glass bottom rather than sitting on top of the sand, as these gobies are prolific excavators and can cause unstable rock piles to collapse. Tank Cover: A tight-fitting lid or screen cover is essential, as they are known jumpers when startled. 3. Diet & Feeding Natural Diet: Constantly sifting through sand to extract benthic microfauna, copepods, and detritus. Captive Diet: While they are exceptional at keeping sandbeds clean, they cannot survive on detritus alone in most home aquariums. They need to be actively fed prepared foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, cyclops, and enriched sinking pellets. Ensuring they get enough food before more aggressive tank mates snatch it up is crucial. 4. Reef Compatibility Status: Reef Safe Behavior: They are peaceful bottom-dwellers that will not harm corals or invertebrates. However, because of their habit of constantly picking up mouthfuls of sand and dumping them over their bodies, they may accidentally bury low-lying corals or frag plugs placed directly on the sandbed. 5. Temperament & Tank Mates Temperament: Highly peaceful. They spend most of their time working the sandbed, either alone or as a bonded pair. Compatibility: Excellent for community tanks. They should be kept with other peaceful fish and avoid being housed with aggressive bottom-dwellers (like large dottybacks or territorial pseudochromis) that might bully them away from their feeding territories.
