It is an essential, hard-working addition to high-light reef systems and large marine setups that generate heavy organic growth. Substrate Behavior and Tank Utility While smaller clean-up species delicately pick at thin film layers, this massive herbivore functions like an industrial lawnmower. Moving steadily across solid surfaces using a broad, muscular foot, it utilizes a highly durable, rasping mouthpart called a radula to scrape down thick, dense turf accumulation. Its physical presence provides unique mechanical benefits to a tank's hardscape. Due to its substantial size and weight—often reaching the size of a golf ball—its constant movement effectively clears pathways across rockwork, preventing algae from choking out nearby coral bases. Because it is highly active during both day and night, it provides non-stop maintenance. Its heavy shell also means it requires stable, well-secured rock formations, as its sheer bulldozing power can easily shift loose, unglued frag plugs or small aquascaping elements as it searches for food. Diet Focus and Consumption Habits This species is a strict herbivore with an exceptionally high metabolism, requiring a constant and abundant supply of marine plant matter to survive. It focuses almost entirely on consuming problematic green hair algae, thick film algae, and fast-growing macroalgae varieties that quickly overwhelm neglected systems. Unlike more selective grazers, its large size allows it to tackle mature, long-strand turf growth that smaller snails ignore. It keeps the upper surfaces of live rock and aquarium glass pristine, preventing colonial pests from gaining a foothold. Because it consumes such massive quantities of plant matter daily, it is highly efficient at processing nutrients, though it requires an environment with an established biological balance to sustain its large appetite over time. Environment and Care Considerations Maintaining this variety successfully requires a mature marine environment with plenty of open swimming space and extensive, stable rock structures. It thrives in standard reef parameters, with an absolute necessity for high dissolved calcium and magnesium levels to support the ongoing development of its thick, calcified shell. The primary challenge when housing this giant grazer is avoiding starvation. In exceptionally clean, low-nutrient aquariums, its efficiency can quickly outpace the tank's natural algae production. If the glass and rockwork become completely bare, its health will rapidly decline. To maintain its long-term vitality in pristine systems, its diet must be supplemented regularly by securing sheets of dried marine algae (nori) to rocks or glass using a veggie clip directly in its path. Additionally, because its heavy shell makes it difficult to flip over if it falls upside down on loose sand, keeping it in a system with plenty of solid rock-to-sand transitions is ideal.
